Spirituals, born in the fields worked by enslaved labor and sung in Black churches throughout the country, were, according to Morris, America’s “original first folk music…work songs (that) pleaded for deliverance and were sung in defiance of atrocity.” They embodied traditions of rhythm, movement, call and response and were passed down through the years, celebrated and replicated by musicians through the decades and to the present.

Tony Allison, a RARE co-founder and current Fundraising Committee Chair, recounts recent travels through the deep South. A former teacher seeking first-hand understanding of our nation’s history, he found startling monuments, moving memorials, delicious food, and vivid impressions – some of them paradoxical. Confronting the legacies of past injustices, he also found a re-dedication to RARE and its mission.
