Owen Lloyd Oliver (Quinault / Isleta Pueblo) comes from the Chinook people of the Lower Columbia River and the Isleta of the Southwest Pueblos. Owen graduated from the University of Washington in spring 2021 with a double major in American Indian Studies and Political Science. Through these majors and experiences at the UW he’s been able to do a range of advocacy work on and off campus. Mainly focused on Indigenous education and ‘Place’ learning, Owen hopes to be able to weave more of his creative writing into all of his political work in the future.

You’ll dive into Play Time, an interactive game show where you and your team compete in creative challenges while celebrating the contributions of artists from the African Diaspora. Through games like dance, trivia, music, and improv, you’ll explore themes of Black history and culture, all while building teamwork and leadership skills.

In this two-hour experience, you’ll warm up with culturally themed icebreakers, collaborate on art projects, and score points for creativity and participation. Each session concludes with a reflection on the role of art in fostering connection and community, leaving you inspired and ready to engage further.

Play Time aligns with the objectives of Connections by fostering teamwork, cultural awareness, and personal growth. Its team-based challenges encourage collaboration and relationship-building, while activities like improv, trivia, and art-making develop communication and leadership skills. Merri Ann Osborne, Executive Director of the Mahogany Project, supports and showcases artists from the African diaspora through collaborative arts. An actor, writer, and community advocate, she has lived in Nigeria, Japan, and the UK and brings extensive teaching experience. Merri Ann holds a B.A. in Political Science (UCLA) and an M.A. in Conflict Resolution (University of Bradford).

Chino Gonzales, an educator, artist, and equity program developer, is a faculty member at Highline College and co-founder of its Q Center. With over 10 years of experience in education and performance art, Chino uses storytelling and the arts to inspire community change. He is also the creator of Bonnet Black, a business offering music and graphic design.

Practical Considerations

Because of the cost, this activity is best for groups of 20 to 40 students.

1) Screen – for projection of slides
2) Microphones – they may not have this available so we will have to supply
3) Mic Stands if available
4) Speakers for mics – same thing

Yes Farm, located at 715 Yesler Way in Seattle, is a 1.5-acre urban farm developed by the Black Farmers Collective. It serves as a community hub offering educational programs and a cooperative farming space. The farm features a community garden with accessible raised beds, enabling residents of Yesler Terrace, including elders, youth, and families, to cultivate their own food and strengthen community bonds. Collaborating with local partners, Yes Farm provides educational initiatives and shares its green space with the diverse community. The farm’s produce supports BIPOC-led organizations, businesses, and mutual aid efforts, promoting economic development and addressing health disparities resulting from systemic oppression. By focusing on sustainable urban agriculture, Yes Farm aims to offer safe green spaces, impart food justice knowledge, and foster healing through community connections.
